Archbishop Hannan’s Hawks made new first-year coach Pat Lambert extremely proud with two outstanding efforts Friday night in the False River Jamboree.

The gutsy Hawks generated just enough offense and executed stingy defense blanking the host False River Gators 7-0 in the opener on the strength of senior David DeHarde’s 40-yard punt return for the game’s only score. Hawks’ freshman quarterback Korey Zeigler hit on one of four attempts finding Thomas Sens for a 26-yard reception.

Defensively, Hannan junior DE Philip Kranz topped the Hawks with seven solo stops and produced a sack, while senior linebacker Mark Morel was credited with four individual tackles. Sophomore Anthony Caronna came up big with a blocked punt.

Coach Sean Zeigler, head of football operations, said it was a tough defensive game.

“It was a physical contest. We showed up on defense to handle the task and walked out with a victory,” coach Zeigler said.

Hannan duplicated its effort in the nightcap securing another 7-0 victory this time against the Ascension Episcopal Blue Gators.

Zeigler provided the winning margin when he hooked up with freshman Jason Brooks on a 74-yard catch and run scoring strike. Zeigler connected on 3-of-5 passes for 89 yards with the score and an interception.

Senior receiver Stuart Seiler caught the other two balls for 15 yards.

Senior linebacker Wesley Harwell and freshman strong safety Zack Castellucio both registered six individual stops to lead the Hawks’ defense.

Coach Zeigler said the Hawks’ turned in another stellar defensive effort against Ascension Episcopal, while the offense was able to come up with the big play it needed offensively.

The Hannan Hawks open the regular season hosting the Class 2A Northlake Christian School Wolverines Saturday with kickoff set for 4 o’clock. The game will be played at Lakeshore High School located off of Highway 1088 in Mandeville.
