Our View

This week, St. Tammany Parish started the celebration of its bicentennial. The parish was established Dec. 22, 1810 during the term of Gov. William C.C. Claiborne. It was the governor who actually named the parish after Native American Chief Tammaned, who was know for promoting peace and goodness.

The sense of peace and goodness has spread throughout the parish for the past 200 years. Today, the parish is one of the fastest growing parishes in the state, with a renowned school system, and a thriving arts community. Wednesday night, the official celebration began the unveiling of the Cultural Icons Project. For the rest of the year, St. Tammany Parish officials will name notable parish residents that have made lasting contributions to the world of the arts and sports. Parish President Kevin Davis has named the first five, and what a group of notables they are: World-renowned author Dr. Walker Percy, NBA basketball legend “Pistol” Pete Maravich, champion boxer Tony Canzoneri and music legends Louis Prima and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown.

We are certain that with our growth and prosperity, St. Tammany Parish will continue to produce citizens that will contribute much to society in and out of the parish. Happy Birthday St. Tammany Parish!
