Though it was not a great surprise, it was still a wonderful thing last week, when the St. Tammany Parish Public School system was reaccredited. What made the accreditation so special last week was that the review committee, which made the final accreditation decision for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools was effusive in their compliments about the school system. The committee was especially impressed with the way the school system had recovered from the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. The head of the committee told the School Board the system is in such good shape, one “would never know Katrina had happened.”
High praise indeed, and all kudos for such a great job should go to the Superintendent Gayle Sloan, the School Board, teachers, staff, and even the students for keeping the idea of excellence alive even in the face of disaster.
