After Hurricane Katrina, the demand for his skills lured Slidell-area retired tree cutter Carl Glass back into work. Glass reportedly hired migrant workers Timothy Wayne Murray of North Carolina and Jody L. Swafford of Florida to help with the increasing workload.
It appears the two men got greedy and knowing Glass often kept a large sum of cash on his person they set out to rob their boss.

Swafford was accused of strangling Glass and holding him down while Murray beat him. His defense attempted to downplay his role saying Swafford only meant to rob Glass not kill him. The defense requested the charges be reduced to manslaughter.
However, the 12-person jury, who heard testimony for three days, deliberated for two hours before returning with a guilty-as-charged verdict for first-degree murder.
The district attorney’s office opted to not seek the death penalty in this case, and therefore Swafford will be give mandatory life in prison when he is formally sentenced at a later date.
Murray, who was one of four inmates who escaped from the St. Tammany Parish Jail last summer and was the last to be recaptured, is not set to go to trial until later this summer.
The district attorney’s office will likely seek the death penalty in his case.
