St. Paul’s defeats Brother Martin

St. Paul’s Wolves defeated Brother Martin 4-2 Monday at Kirsch Rooney Stadium as the Wolves improved to 7-2. St. Paul’s Christian Trent (3-1) tossed a complete-game four-hitter, striking out 11 walking three. SPS took the lead in the third when Aaron Allain singled and scored on freshman Joel Spansel’s RBI single. In the fifth, Joel Spansel singled again, stole a base and scored when his older brother senior Christian Spansel hit a sacrifice fly. Christian Spansel went 3-3 and scored a run in the seventh when Shane Lacrouts delivered a pinch-hit RBI single. Dane Stubbs also singled in the inning and scored. Tanner Rainey went 2-4, while John Gremillion contributed a hit. 

Brother Martin tallied its two runs off Trent in the bottom of the seventh. The hurler regained his composure and set down the Crusaders to earn the victory.

St. Paul’s tallied single runs in the third and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning.

NHS goes 4-0 in Umpires tourney

Northshore’s Panthers went 4-0 in the New Orleans Umpires Tournament held Thursday to Sunday. Going back to last season Northshore (9-0), the defending state champion, is 43-2 over their last 45 games.

The Panthers opened Thursday by defeating Jesuit 13-7 at Kirsch Rooney Stadium with the game being called in the top of the sixth due to darkness. The Blue Jays tallied a run in the top of the sixth, but the final score went back to the final completed frame. NHS pounded out 14 hits. Ryan Eades had a monster day with a home run, a triple and five runs batted in.

Taylor Eads posted two hits, including a double and two RBIs. Chris Eades doubled twice and drove in a run. Trey Rickrode went 3-4 with a triple and two driven in. Breck Kline went 3-4 with a double, an RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases. Travis Herrin and Chris Miller also had hits for NHS.

Chase Compton (1-0) started and earned the victory. A.J. Garza picked up a save. On Saturday, the Panthers played two games, both at Mike Miley. NHS defeated Archbishop Shaw 9-5 in eight innings. The game was tied 5-5 through seven. Kyle Deckwa hit his second homer, a solo shot and drove in two. Compton doubled twice and tallied two RBIs. Ryan Eades totaled two hits and two runs batted in. Chris Eades singled and drove one in, while courtesy runner Nick Ledet swiped two bases and scored. In Saturday’s second game, Northshore blew an 8-1 lead when Archbishop Rummel put up eight runs in the fourth to go up 9-8 and then 10-8 in the fifth. The Panthers responded with three in the sixth to take an 11-10 win. Ryan Eades went deep and had three RBIs, while Eads also homered and drove in two. Compton finished with two hits and three runs scored. Herrin singled and had two RBIs, while Chris Eades singled. Deckwa, Miller and Josh Dakin all had one hit for NHS. Codey Miller (1-0) picked up the win in relief giving up one unearned run in two innings. Chris Eades got his first save with a perfect seventh.

On Sunday, Northshore downed Brother Martin 11-1 at Kirsch Rooney. The Panthers scored 10 runs in the sixth to force the 10-run rule. Kline hit a two-run shot finishing with two hits and three RBIs. Eads singled twice and drove in a pair. Chris Eades singled and had two RBIs. Chris Miller and Rickrode each had a hit and a run batted in. Deckwa and Ryan Eades posted one-hit each. Jacob Corbin (4-0) was strong on the mound. He went the distance allowing one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.

Slidell finishes 2-2 in CHS Tourney

Slidell’s Tigers tallied a 2-2 mark in the Covington Tournament held Thursday to Saturday. SHS was 5-3 at press time.

Big innings were the key in three of the four games. Slidell opened the tournament Thursday with a 10-7 setback to Parkview Baptist at St. Paul’s. The Eagles outscored Slidell 7-1 in the first inning, but the Tigers came back with two runs each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to tie things at 7-7. Parkview Baptist scored three times in the seventh for the win. Randal Meyer doubled twice for SHS and drove in a run, while Tré Wiebelt went 3-4 with a double and an RBI. Dixon Faciane doubled and drove in one. Ricky Secrist singled and had a run batted in and Adam Lagarde also had a hit. Tyler Burrell suffered the loss in relief. On Friday, Slidell broke open a 2-2 game with four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to capture an 11-4 victory at Mandeville High.

Lagarde went 3-3 with four runs scored, while Meyer tallied two hits and two RBIs and Daubert singled twice and drove in a run. Secrist and Wiebelt both singled and had a run batted in, while Faciane walked twice and drove in a run. Cameron Charbonnet singled and scored for Slidell. Meyer collected the win giving up three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and six walks in six innings. On Saturday, the Tigers played two games at Covington High. They won the first one 7-2 over Runnels. Dylan Aymond singled and drove in two runs, while Faciane doubled and posted an RBI. Meyer went 2-3 with a double and run scored. Wiebelt singled and drove one in. Winning pitcher Blake Bozant went the distance, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and a strikeout. In their second game, Slidell suffered an 11-7 loss to 2009 state runner-up Dutchtown, who tallied six runs in the fifth inning. Meyer was 3-4 with a double and an RBI, while Lagarde had two hits, including a double. Secrist doubled and drove in three runs. Aymond doubled and logged an RBI. Wiebelt singled and tallied an RBI, while Wiebelt singled and drove in a run. Charbonnet singled.

Daubert started and suffered the loss.
