Slidell firefighters were able to react quickly and stop a fire in an empty house from spreading to another home on Fifth Street last week.

Fire District One Chief Larry Hess said 20 firefighters and four engines responded to the fire about 10:45 Sept. 2. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found the house at 1933 Fifth St. heavily involved in flames.

Firefighters noticed that the house next to the empty one was in danger of catching fire also, so they evacuated the house, went into the burning building and extinguished it in about 25 minutes, according to Hess.

The chief said that it was lucky that Fire Station 11 in Olde Towne was close to the fire, and firefighters were able to respond very fast. Other stations that could have responded to the blaze were all closed for the day due to budget restraints, Hess said.

There were no injuries, and the empty house sustained heavy damage according to fire officials. Hess said fire investigators determined an electrical problem in the empty house was the cause of the fire.
