Pope John Paul II’s Jaguars suffered a 22-0 loss to the host team in the Newman Jamboree held Friday night.

The teams played a pair of 15-minute halves.

The Greenies got on the board when Ronnie Vinson, a Louisiana State University verbal commitment, caught a 25-yard touchdown pass.

Newman took a 13-0 lead to the half. In the second half, the Greenies scored a touchdown to make it 19-0 and tacked on a field goal for the victory.

PJP coach Mark Jeanmard said the Jaguars moved the ball offensively, but couldn’t capitalize. He said running back Tyler Lusignan returned a kickoff 30 yards and had some good runs.

Jeanmard said defensively, Pope John Paul II had trouble adjusting to Newman’s offensive speed. He added the Greenies run a lot of short routes in their spread offense, which takes a lot of time off the clock.

Despite the loss, Jeanmard feels his team has gotten better since last week’s scrimmage.

“I thought we improved from the scrimmage, but we have a lot of work to do,” Jeanmard said. “Hopefully like last week, we continue to improve. There are no more dress rehearsals. Every game counts toward the playoffs.”

PJP begins the regular season at home Friday night by hosting St. Patrick of Mississippi.
