Jaguars’ coach Mark Jeanmard enters his second year with PJP and said he’s excited about the jamboree.
“All the kids and coaches know they didn’t give their best effort in the scrimmage (last Saturday) and they’re looking for redemption,” Jeanmard said.
Newman went 8-3 and made it to the second round of postseason under Nelson Stewart, who enters his fourth season with a 26-9 (.742 winning percentage) record at Newman.
Stewart said his club is going against a very good football team.
“Pope has a good numbers,” Stewart said. “They have good size and they tackle well. They are a very good double-A team. This will be one of the better football teams we’ll play.”
The teams were scheduled to play each other last season in this jamboree, but Hurricane Gustav cancelled it.
Jeanmard said he was excited when he agreed to this game last year because Newman is a good 2A team.
Fans will have a chance to see two totally offenses at work.
Pope John Paul II runs the veer and likes to control the clock, while Newman will operate a no-huddle spread attack.
Jeanmard said facing the Greenies offense give his defense a chance to work on their communication skills.
He said one of the big problems Newman’s attack creates is that it’s tough to make substitutions.
The Jaguars’ defense bases out of the 4-4 and returns three all-district players in senior middle linebacker Christian Bruhn, senior linebacker Tyler Bolner and junior end Calvin Durel. Bruhn made the second-team all-district at tight end, while Bolner was named as a linebacker and Durel got on as a lineman.
They will be going against an offense that features running back/strong safety Ronnie Vinson, four-year starter, second at running back and verbal commitment to Louisiana State University for his defensive back skills. Stewart said he is an impact player.
The quarterback is junior Ryan Brennan, who is in his first year of starting. Stewart said Brennan is smart, careful with the football and has a good command of the offense.
His main target is senior wide receiver Merritt Talbot, who also plays tight end.
For PJP’s offense, junior Clyde Perkins gets the start under center.
The running backs are seniors Tyler Lusignan and Ryan Cosse along with junior Carlo Conforto and sophomore Kyle Canulette. Senior Zach Goodnow is the split end.
Lusignan made second-team all-district for his defensive-back skills.
Defensively, Newman bases out of a 4-3.
Weak side linebacker Wil Fischer, a four-year starter, leads the unit. Also, coach Stewart said two-year starter Alex Fisher and tackle Alex Paul are standouts on the line.
Paul is a 6-foot-5, 285-pound sophomore in his second year of starting. Stewart said Paul is very athletic.
