USTA Fall Junior Team tennis
The 2009 United States Tennis Association Fall Junior Team Tennis runs Oct. 3 to Nov. 14 for those ages 8-18 at Cross Gates Family Fitness. The deadline is Aug. 31.
A USTA membership is required and costs $25. The price includes match play Saturday afternoons in Oct. and Nov. with a six-match minimum for the season, official team tennis uniform, awards for winners and an opportunity to advance to the state championship. SLU Tailgating spots available
A limited number of complimentary tailgating spaces in Southeastern Louisiana University’s Friendship Circle are available to be reserved for the upcoming season. All spots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and must be saved prior to game day. VIA Fall Training program planned
The Volleyball Institute of America is holding its annual Fall Training Program for ages 7-14. Fall Training is a seven-week volleyball program that begins Sept. 13. The rest of the month includes, Sept. 20 and 27. In October, you can go Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25. The time frames are 12:30-2:00 p.m. (ages 7-10), 2:30-4 p.m. (11s and 12s) and 4:30-6 p.m. (13s and 14s). The last day of Fall Training will include tryouts for the 2009 Club Season. Tour de Tangipahoa
The Kiwanis Club of Hammond is holding the 18th annual Tour de Tangipahoa on Sept. 19. The event will feature 30 and 62-mile rides. The cost is $30 prior to Sept. 10 and $35 after. Participants will be given a free T-shirt. There will also be refreshments, including sports juice, fruit, candy and water will be provided at rest stops.
Following the race will be a free lunch. Police escorts, SAG wagons and mechanical assistance will be provided to cyclists. Check-in time is 6 a.m. between the University Center and the Alumni Center on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University. The 62-mile ride departs at 7:30 a.m. and the 30-mile event gets underway at 9 a.m.

Fallen firefighters golf tournament
The New Orleans Metro Firefighters is hosting the second annual National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and Benefit Golf Tournament at Lakewood Country Club in Algiers Oct. 13. The cost is $150 per player or $600 a foursome or $550 before Sept. 15. There will be two flights. The morning flight begins at 8 for first responders and all other golfers tee off at 1 p.m. Three sponsorship levels are available at $100, $500 and $1,000.
Donations go to the National Fallen Firefighters Association and National Football League charities. NFL players will be taking part in both flights. PJP athletics golf tournament
The PJP Athletics Golf Tournament occurs Oct. 17 at Pinewood Country Club with check-in at noon, lunch at 12:30 and tee-off at 1 with an awards banquet following the event. The cost to enter the four-man scramble is $75 per golfer and is limited to the first 80 entrants. Participants will receive a monogrammed golf shirt, a player appreciation bag and there will be door prizes. You can signup alone or as a team. youth program
The Northshore Tennis Association has an ongoing Junior and Mr. Pee Wee development tennis program for boys and girls ages 4-18. It starts with private or semi-private sessions to familiarize youngsters with tennis terms, stroke production and procedures. The year-round programs are held at the Kehoe-France Northshore School and public courts in Covington and Mandeville. Competitions are held for boys and girls 10 and under that have not been ranked on a state level and are new to tournament competition. Yearly registration is $25 and $5 and an unopened can of tennis balls is required per tournament or $8 total per tournament.
