The Northlake Christian School Wolverines were scheduled to host the Ascension Catholic Bulldogs in a scrimmage Friday night, but the action was delayed due to inclement weather and rescheduled for Saturday morning at William Pitcher Junior High.

NCS first-year coach Tony Agresta said he felt good about what his club got out of the scrimmage.

“Our opponent didn’t stop us as much as we stopped ourselves. The mistakes we made are correctable. We want to continue to progress and are looking forward to Friday’s jamboree,” Agresta said.

The Wolverines travel to Metairie Friday to participate in the St. Martin Jamboree. NCS takes on Thomas Jefferson at 6 p.m.

In Saturday morning’s scrimmage Ascension Catholic found the end zone three times, while NCS scored once.

The scrimmage began with both teams working on special teams’ play for about 20 minutes. The clubs worked on field goals, points after touchdown along with live contact at the line of scrimmage with punts being fair caught downfield.

Following the special teams’ work, Ascension Catholic opened with the No. 1s running 10 plays followed by NCS taking 10 snaps. The No. 2s ran eight plays. Ascension Catholic’s first score came on a four-yard run. The Bulldogs tallied their second TD on a lob pass.

NCS defensive back Derek Williams had good coverage on the play, but the ball deflected off of his hands and the receiver made a nice catch getting both feet in bounds to tally the TD. Northlake Christian sophomore Austin Cherry tallied the Wolverines’ lone score on a 50-yard run with the second group.

Ascension Catholic scored its final touchdown on their No. 1s last possession on a 5-yard run. NCS was flagged for several penalties, which aided the drive.

Following the alternating series, the teams began at the 30-yard line in down-and-distance sequences. The teams had to pick up a first down in three plays or the ball was re-spotted at the 30 without any punting.

Agresta said his team only one bad offensive possession in down-and-distance. NCS’ defense came up strong on Ascension Catholic’s first possession forcing a three-and-out.

The Wolverines moved the ball down to the Bulldogs’ five, but a holding call nullified a good drive. Wolverines’ sophomore quarterback Timmy Broussard had a look at a wide-open Josh Seale, but overthrew him.

On NCS’ second possession, the Wolverines fumbled the ball away.

Agresta said other than that possession, the Wolverines showed consistency moving the ball.
