Thanks to the local media and residents’ response, Slidell police were able to arrest the woman who allegedly stole an iPod from someone’s purse during the 6:30 p.m. Mass at St. Mary Margaret Church July 26.

Assistant Police Chief Jesse Simon said that a person, who saw the surveillance video of the theft the police had distributed to the media, recognized the suspect, called up the girl’s mother and the mother brought the girl in to police headquarters. The suspect , Krysta Cousin, 17, of Lacombe was charged with theft under $300 which is a misdemeanor, Simon said.

“She was very apologetic,” Simon said.

St. Margaret Mary Church officials alerted police to the theft after looking at the surveillance video set up in the church’s kitchen. On the video Cousin is seen removing the iPod from a purse, wrapping the headphones around the music player and then hiding it. After taking the iPod the suspect is then seen moving the purse several times, going through the pockets of a jacket in the kitchen and going through the food pantry.

Simon said that Cousin was attending Mass with her mother when she said she had to go to the restroom, and had to go through the church kitchen.

Cousin’s mother brought her to police headquarters around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

“We want to thank the media and our outstanding community for their help,” Simon said.
