Sales tax holiday today, Saturday

Published on Friday, August 7, 2009 8:46 AM CDT

Shoppers will pay a little less for their purchases today and tomorrow, thanks to the 2009 Louisiana State Sales Tax Holiday.

The holiday exempts the first $2,500 of most retail purchases from the four-percent state sales tax. It began just after midnight last night, and will run through midnight Saturday.

Required by state law, the holiday takes place each year on the first consecutive Friday and Saturday in August.

The exemption applies to purchases of most individual items of tangible personal property for non-business use. The state sales tax will be paid on that portion of the price on any individual item in excess of $2,500.

The exemption does not apply to sales taxes collected by parishes, towns, school boards, or other local taxing authorities. Sellers may take advantage of a special provision from the Louisiana Department of Revenue that offers a $25 credit to offset the cost of programming their cash registers.
