Two St. Tammany favorites, red bean and rice and the New Orleans Saints, will combine for the fifth annual Red Beans ‘n Rice Cook-off from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the Slidell Municipal Auditorium.

Former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert, elected to the Saints Hall of Fame in 1999, will be the honorary chairperson for the event, which kicks off the 2009 United Way Campaign to benefit its currently funded agencies in St. Tammany.

St. Tammany Fire District 1 and the St. Tammany Parish Department of Fire Services will once again host the event, and an agency fair will be held in which representatives of the various nonprofit organizations will be on hand to distribute information and provide desserts.

The staff of Calamari A/C & Heating will battle it out to see who has the best red beans in town during the 5th annual Red Beans ‘n Rice Cook-off Monday in Slidell. Admission is $7 per person for all-you-can-eat. Music will be provided by DJ Dan, and a number of cooking teams will raffle a wide variety of prizes. This year’s judges are Bob Baker, Dave Duplantier, Bernie Cyrus, Laura Buchtel of WWL-TV and Slidell City Councilwoman Kim Harbison.

Attendees will also get a chance to pick their favorite cooking booth.

Drive through and take-out meals will be available. The Slidell Municipal Auditorium is located at 2056 Second St.
