Two Covington bridges to be restricted and closed

Published on Friday, March 13, 2009 10:24 AM CDT

Two bridges in St. Tammany Parish, both north of Covington, received status changes effective this week in the interest of public safety. One bridge was downgraded to a three-ton limit, and the other will be closed to vehicular traffic.

The Million Dollar Road Bridge in Covington has been downgraded to a three ton limit effective today. This downgrade is for safety reasons. Passenger cars will still be able to use the bridge, but construction equipment, school buses, fire vehicles, ambulances, and heavy delivery trucks or trailers may not use this bridge.

Necessary repairs will be made, but in the interest of public safety only passenger cars may use it until repairs are completed.

The Holly Drive Bridge off of Highway 21 in Covington going toward Waldheim is closed to all vehicular traffic effective today.

Also, in the interest of public safety, this bridge will remain closed to vehicular traffic until repairs are made.

Both these bridge repair projects are part of the ongoing infrastructure improvements undertaken by St. Tammany Parish.

“We are trying to be very proactive in these bridge improvements and others,” said Parish President Kevin Davis. “By temporarily closing or restricting traffic on bridges while we make necessary repairs and improvements, we put the safety of our citizens first.”
