A Slidell woman, who said she was “bored,” and wanted something to do Tuesday afternoon, was arrested by Slidell police for allegedly making a false report of a fire and a false report of a burglary to the city’s 911 emergency system.

Slidell police got a call from the woman on a cell phone about 11:30 a.m. saying that her home in the 500 block of Maine Avenue was being burglarized. Police responded to the call and went to the address, but the owner told police that he had not called police and there was no burglary.

When dispatchers tried to call back the phone number, all they got was a recording saying the phone number was no longer in service.

Snipes

An hour later 911 dispatchers got another call from the same woman from the same cell phone. This time, the woman reported a house fire at the corner of Sixth Street and Maine Avenue.

Several police cars and fire engines from Fire District One responded to the call, but when they got to the location, there was no fire.

Dispatchers called the police on the scene to tell them the cell phone was in the area of Sixth and Maine.

Police spotted a woman in the yard of 504 Maine Ave., and questioned her about the telephone calls. Police said that at first the woman denied making the calls, but finally admitted that she made the calls, because she was “bored.”

When police called 911 from the woman’s cell phone, dispatchers confirmed it was the same phone number that had been used to make the fake reports.

Police then arrested Ashley K. Snipes, 20, 504 Maine Ave., for one count of making a false report of a fire, one count of making a false report of a crime, and two outstanding warrants for probation violation.

Police spokesman Capt. Kevin Foltz said that Snipes was convicted of theft in April 2008 and June 2008. The first theft conviction was for shoplifting under $100, and the second was for theft over $300. Foltz said Snipes had stolen some money from a laundry business in June 2008.

Snipes were still in the Slidell jail on a probation hold and $800 bond Wednesday afternoon.

Both Foltz and Chief of Police Freddie Drennan said that what Snipes allegedly did was very dangerous, not only to police and firefighters but also to citizens.

“An innocent citizen could have been injured while they (police) were responding to her false calls for help, plus the fake calls could delay response to a legitimate call,” Drennan said.
