As wildfire raged on both ends of the parish this weekend, members of St. Tammany Fire Districts 1 and 4 had their work cut out for them with a trio of house fires that left several people homeless.

On Monday, a Mandeville man was burning leaves in the yard of his home at 1322 Clover Lane. Thinking the fire was under control, he went inside to take a nap. The fire continued to grow, however, spreading to the side of the house.

“The next thing he knew, a neighbor was pounding on his door,” said Fire District 4 Chief Rick Tassin.

The man was not seriously injured, although emergency personnel recommended he go to the hospital to be checked for smoke inhalation. But he refused.

The house was declared a total loss.

Also in Mandeville, an overloaded extension cord is believed to have triggered a blaze at 32 Adin Drive on Saturday.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, and fire damage was confined to one room and a portion of the attic, although the rest of the house sustained heavy smoke and heat damage.

One firefighter suffered a sprained ankle while battling the blaze.

In Slidell, a babysitter was watching six children when fire erupted in the attic of a home at 110 Pine Circle Monday afternoon.

Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting through the roof of the 1,500-square-foot home. The blaze was brought under control in about 40 minutes, but not before severely damaging the home.

There were no injuries, and the exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
