Vigil Friday for murder victims in Franklinton

Published on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 8:47 AM CST

A double murder that shocked the small town of Franklinton will be remembered one year later in a memorial this Friday.

Anita Smith, 46, and her 32-year-old nephew, William Lewis, were found fatally shot in Smith’s house in their quiet neighborhood on Feb. 6 last year. The case remains unsolved.

Family and friends will gather at 6 p.m. this Friday in the fellowship hall at Hillcrest Baptist Church to honor the pair.

The brief program will feature speeches by Smith’s three daughters, a slideshow and candlelight vigil. Supporters will be wearing T-shirts that read, “Justice for Anita and William.” The ceremony will also feature the music of Anita Smith, who once sang with the popular Northshore band, Smokey Creek. A new CD compilation of Smith singing with Smokey Creek, “Photographs & Memories,” was recently released in Washington Parish. Proceeds from the sale of this benefit CD will be used to publicize a $10,000 reward in the case.

Smith was a former advertising account executive with St. Tammany News.
