Brown Bag series moves to Heritage Park; begins today

Friday means free music in Slidell with the return of the Brown Bag Concert Series on Oct. 3.

Long a fixture of tiny Griffith Park, next door to Municipal Auditorium on Second Street, the series is moving a few blocks away to Heritage Park on Bayou Lane, behind the historic Front Street train station. This Friday’s concert will feature Missi Spinosa and Ray Ybos, lead vocalists for Witness, a popular local band.

“They appeal to audiences of all ages,” said City Planning Department staffer Marina Stevens, who organizes the Brown Bag concerts. “Their excitement, spontaneity and ability to make the audience a part of the fun is sure to make the concert a fun day to be remembered.”

According to Stevens, the concerts were relocated to attract a larger audience.

“We want to increase the number of residents, tourists and students on school field trips who enjoy the noontime concerts,” she said. “Heritage Park will have room for everybody.”

The series annually features about 30 area performers, including many who have appeared at venues elsewhere in the United States, Latin America and Europe. The series provides musical and folk-life entertainment representative of the region’s rich artistic culture and heritage.

The rest of the schedule is as follows:

• Oct. 10, Lucia.

• Oct. 17, We 3 Sing.

• Oct. 24, Papillion.

• Oct. 31, Redoux.

Guests are reminded that no pets, skateboards, glass items or barbecue grills are allowed in the park.

In the event of rain, concerts will be rescheduled if possible.

Weather cancellation updates will be posted on the City of Slidell website, www.slidell.la.us, and on the Planning Department telephone service at 646-4322.
