Guidry to run for Louisiana Supreme Court

Louisiana 5th Circuit Court of Appeal Judge Greg Guidry, a former federal prosecutor and district judge, has announced his candidacy for the Louisiana Supreme Court.

Guidry is a graduate of LSU Law School, where he was selected for Law Review and the Order of the Coif.

Following law school, Guidry joined the civil law firm of Liskow & Lewis. In 1989, he joined the Louisiana Attorney General’s legal team. The U.S. Attorney hired Guidry to lead federal prosecutions. As a federal prosecutor, Guidry served as chief of the Violent Crime and Drug Units. He served as the office’s Ethics and Professional Responsibility Counselor.

He served on behalf of the nation’s government as a legal advisor and trial advocacy instructor for the U.S. Department of Justice, where he trained new prosecutors in the United States, the Virgin Islands and South Africa.

His strong legal training won him high honors from the FBI and the U.S. Attorney General. Guidry earned several commendations for Special Achievement in the New Orleans office of the U.S. Attorney for his outstanding legal work in criminal prosecutions.

Guidry was elected to the 24th Judicial District Court in 2000 and earned a strong reputation as a judge who is tough on sentencing violent criminals. In 2003, Guidry was honored with the Victims & Citizens Against Crime award for justice. He was elected to the Court of Appeal without opposition.

Guidry is a founder of the American Inn of Court, a program designed to improve professionalism among attorneys. He launched the inaugural session of Jefferson Parish’s Environmental Court, designed to beautify the parish and strengthen our quality of life. Guidry is a highly sought after judicial lecturer for the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association and the Louisiana Judicial College. Guidry, 47, is a native of Harvey. He is the son of Lorraine and O.H. Guidry.

His father is a former Air Force lieutenant, a former principal of West Jefferson High School and the former Jefferson Parish School Board member who represented District 3.

Guidry attended LSU, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree for his study of Political Science.

Guidry is married to the former Cathy Thompson, a nurse at Ochsner Hospital in Metairie. They have two children, Ellie (15) and Patrick (9). Guidry served on the Board of Advisors for Catholic Charities, the Board of Directors for the Westwego Rotary Club, the Parish Council for Immaculate Conception church, and the National Association of Assistant U.S. Attorneys. He was elected to and served on the Republican Parish Executive Committee.
