Waste Management honored for ethics

Houston-based Waste Management Inc. was named one of the world’s most ethical companies in 2008 by the Ethisphere Institute, a New York-based think tank dedicated to business ethics and corporate responsibility.

WM was chosen by a team of lawyers, government officials and leading college professors after reviewing more than 10,000 companies on six continents.

The award was given June 3 during a dinner ceremony in New York hosted by the Institute’s “Ethisphere Magazine” and “Forbes” magazine. WM, one of more than 100 companies honored including McDonald’s, Nike, BMW, Honda, Starbucks, GAP, Time Warner and PepsiCo, was the only company to receive the recognition in the Environmental Services and Equipment category.

The award comes after Ethisphere analysts reviewed codes of ethics, litigation and regulatory histories, evaluated investment in innovation and sustainable business practices, past nominations from senior executives, industry peers, suppliers and customers, and worked with consumer action groups for feedback and ratings.

WM CEO David Steiner called the award an honor.

“Leadership and values start at the top of any company, and ethical companies operate in a way that contributes to the success of their business and the communities they serve,” he said. “At Waste Management, I believe it is our responsibility to make positive change for the environment and for society.”

WM touts itself as a leading developer, operator and owner of waste-to-energy and landfill gas-to-energy facilities in the United States.
