A new harbor pavilion, renovated sidewalks and tree plantings are all pieces of the $1 million lakefront revitalization pie in Mandeville that is finally taking shape.

After more than a year since the plan was first introduced to revamp the crown jewel of Mandeville after it sustained extensive damage from hurricanes, the project list for the master lakefront improvement plan is quickly dwindling.

Most notably is the newly constructed pavilion off Bayou Castine that was recently opened to the public. The previous structure had withstood the test of time for almost 30 years until it was demolished to make way for the glistening, new ivory edifice that sports a cupola roof housing a light to resemble that of a lighthouse.

Also checked off the list is the bike and walking path improvement project. Earlier this year, crews first scraped the excess growth of grass off the paths then applied a thick layer of asphalt over the existing cement walks. They also widened some sections of the paths to match the existing walkways.

To compliment the paths, crews are currently installing 50 trees across the mile and a half stretch of grassy shoreline that is visited by countless individuals each weekend.

The tree installation is being paid for by a $50,000 grant and includes the planting of several different types of native species, including oaks and cypresses.

Next on the list of planned projects will be the adding of more parking along Lakeshore Drive, the possible erection of lights across the lakefront and additional seating areas.

The final portion, and costliest, will be a complete renovation of the harbor pavilion park area. An estimated $350,000 will be used to construct an adult/child friendly environment that will boast updated play equipment, extensive landscaping and a possible water feature for individuals of all ages to enjoy. The plans for the project are still ongoing with a final price yet to be announced.

Overall, Mayor Eddie Price sees his vision for the area finally coming together.

“It’s kind of all melding together,” he said. “It’s going to become a prime area for constituents to come out and have a great time, but it may take a few years to get it all finished.”
