Court rules in Sheriff'€™s favor in discrimination suit

After deliberating for fewer than 45 minutes Tuesday evening, a federal jury unanimously rejected claims by a former female employee of the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office that she was discriminated against by the Sheriff during her employment with the agency.

Christy Admire, now employed by the Covington Police Department, alleged gender discrimination led to her being passed over for promotion while she worked in the St. Tammany Parish Jail. The court rejected on summary judgment another gender claim by Admire that she was discriminated against when she tried but failed to qualify as a criminal patrol deputy.

The jury affirmed the Sheriff’s position that Admire was denied promotion because she was within six months of a disciplinary action. She was, in fact, promoted twice subsequent to that six month period.

In rejecting Admire’s claim, the jury found that the Sheriff’s Office has policies in effect which ensure the fair and equal treatment of all employees.

In response to the decision, Sheriff Strain said, “We are very pleased with this verdict. It reaffirms what we have worked hard to establish over the last 12 years. That is, to treat every one of our employees equally and in an even-handed manner.”
