A traffic stop by Slidell police Saturday resulted in the arrest of a Slidell man on a two-year- old warrant for attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery.

Slidell police spokesman Capt. Kevin Foltz said officers stopped Jimmie C. Mitchell, 36, 2611 Eighth St., Slidell, at the corner of Gause and Robert boulevards Saturday night when they noticed he didn’t have his headlights on. During a check of Mitchell’s background, police discovered he had two outstanding warrants for attempted armed robbery and aggravated battery for an incident that happened in March 2006.

Foltz said the robbery victim was sitting on a bench at a basketball court on Campbell Street one March evening when Mitchell approached him. According to the victim, Mitchell allegedly picked up a 2 x 4 piece of wood and hit the victim across the head.

While the victim was on the ground, Mitchell allegedly hit the man several more times, causing a compound fracture in one of the victim’s little fingers. Mitchell then allegedly demanded the victim take off his pants. When the victim was undressed, Mitchell went through the pants, found nothing and fled the scene. The victim told police Mitchell did not find $120 he had in his pants’ pocket.

When police found out about the warrants, Mitchell was arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery, aggravated battery, having no headlights and driving with an expired driver’s license.

He was transferred to the St. Tammany Parish Jail, Foltz said.
