Basically finished. That’s how Mandeville Mayor Eddie Price described the public boat launch after it recently reopened after three months of renovations.

Boater enthusiasts who have been using nearby docks in Lacombe, Covington and Madisonville began flocking to the Jackson Avenue ramps at the Mandeville Lakefront soon after the new monolithic slabs were put into place.

“It’s my first time using it since it reopened, but it seems nice and deeper,” Abita Springs resident Steve Letulle said.

Other boaters expressed similar compliments with most pleased with the final product.

“It’s solid concrete, so we’re hoping it lasts for at least 20 years,” Price said.

The previous dilapidated ramps consisted of individual concrete slabs anchored together with large metal bolts. Over time, the bolts corroded away, causing the slabs to topple over and make it hazardous for drivers to launch their boats.

Now the ramps consist of individual monolithic slabs of concrete that extend farther into the water, making for a much smoother ride.

Price said crews have only light touch-up work left to complete for the city but will most likely postpone their departure by several days to repair the bulkheads on the Pontchartrain Yacht Club’s property after they were damaged from the construction.
