Pearl River High junior Caitlyn Harper set a personal record and won the javelin event during Wednesday's Region III Track Meet held at Salmen and hosted by McDonogh 35.

Harper threw the javelin 112 feet, 10 inches, defeating Vandebilt Catholic's Emma Gaiennie (107-7).

Harper thought she had a good throw but was surprised when the measurement was tallied.

"I didn't believe it at first," she said. "It was crazy. It felt like one of my better ones, but it didn't feel like it would be that far."

Her coach, Charlie Bowman, said Harper has been improving in practice lately.

"Last week, she hit 100 in practice a few times. This week, we were looking pretty good. She wasn't doing a whole lot of throwing, but technically, she was doing everything right. We felt we could be in the 100-range. I was a little shocked she got 112, pleasantly shocked," Bowman said.

The coach added he feels she could get to 120 by state, scheduled for May 3 in Baton Rouge for classes 3A-5A.

The top three finishers from each event qualified for state. Cabrini won the girls' team competition with 145 points. Edna Karr (126) was second, followed by Vandebilt (64), Helen Cox (63) and McDonough 35 (49). Locally, Pearl River (14) was ninth and Salmen (10) 10th in the 16-team event.
