With an overall coaching record of 629 wins and 248 losses, Salmen High School’s basketball coach Jay Carlin has been ranked Louisiana’s 13th all-time winningest coach. St. Tammany Parish School Board Deputy Superintendent Trey Folse, one of Carlin’s former assistants, introduced Carlin at the School Board meeting Thursday night and praised him for not only providing his players with a responsible role model, but also acting as a father figure for them on occasion.

Folse added that “we will be watching as he climbs the ladder to Number One on the list.”

Among Carlin’s accolades since 1984, when he started his coaching career, are: named state Coach of the Year twice; named District Coach of the Year 18 times; five times bringing his team to the state Final Four; and winning 17 district championships.

Among his former players is the Chicago Bulls’ Chris Duhon, who played at Duke University after graduating from Salmen.

Carlin’s response to the standing ovation given him at the meeting was simply, “This honor is a reflection of every team, every player I’ve ever coached. They are also honored. I’m fortunate to have had players that want to play, get better and learn the game. We have a first class program with great support.”
