Archbishop Hannan senior Mike Manguno is a three-sport athlete with the Hawks.

Manguno is the starting second baseman on the Hawks’ baseball team. He started at quarterback and was selected to play in the inaugural Lake Pontchartrain All-Star Classic football game played in the Superdome. Manguno helped the Northshore seniors defeat the Southshore, 27-6. Manguno was also a starter for the Hawks’ basketball team.

Manguno excels in the classroom and is the Archbishop Hannan student body president.

Hannan first-year baseball coach Boomer Nunez described Manguno as a player any team would love to have on its roster.

“Mike is a tremendous teammate and a superb leader. He is always right there to pick up a teammate who is down on himself,” Nunez said.

“It doesn’t matter what sport he is playing, he is a proven leader. People look up to him because he knows how to get things done. Mike has earned the respect of his teammates, and he deserves all the good things that come his way,” Nunez added.

Nunez said when it comes down to crunch time, he wants Manguno on his side of the ball.

What do you enjoy most about playing your sports? I just enjoy the challenge of playing high school sports. I like the added challenge of taking care of my school work.

What do you like best about being a student athlete? I don’t like to sit back. I just like to be challenged. I love making the commitment to put the time and effort in to represent my school. I have always taken pride in the Hannan spirit. I grew up around it as a youngster, and I firmly believe what it stands for.

Do you feel an added responsibility of being a role model as a student athlete? It means a lot to represent Archbishop Hannan, especially after all we have been through with Hurricane Katrina and the relocation. To be part of a special group of people that didn’t quit on the school means an awful lot to me. I want to be a positive influence on the younger students. I always play hard because that is the way sports should be played.

Most memorable game? I’d say winning my first varsity game as the team’s starting quarterback. The Hawks defeated the Lusher Lions, 28-27. (Manguno completed 18-of-31 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns in the game. He hooked up with senior receiver Cameron Fenney for all three scores, covering 30, 20 and 68 yards to help lead the Hawks to their initial victory.)

Who has been the most influential person in your school sports career? I‘d have to say two people. My former football coach Corey Bordelon, who was a really big motivator. He pushed me to do lots of things also on a personal level with my schoolwork. This past football season our new coach George Templet gave me a chance that I could never thank him enough for. He believed in me as our team’s starting quarterback.

Who is your favorite athlete? Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. I was hurtin’ when he announced his retirement.

Favorite team? Green Bay Packers in football and the New York Yankees in baseball.

What is your favorite subject in school? Science.

Plans after high school/college major? I want to go into Honors College at LSU. I plan on majoring in pre med and would like to become a pediatrician.

Favorite sports movie/TV show/actor/actress? “Remember the Titans,” “ESPN SportsCenter.” Denzel Washington and Keira Knightley.

Favorite type of music? Alternative rock.

Favorite food dish? Anything Chinese.

Best vacation? Family summer vacations to the beach in Florida.

Best thing about living on the Northshore? Having an opportunity to attend Archbishop Hannan.

Hobbies/volunteering: Playing three sports and being active as the Hannan student body president I don’t have too much spare time. Last year, I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity helping to build a house. I also volunteered my time with a Boy Scout summer camp. I guess I was a glorified water boy, riding around on a golf cart bringing water to the camp participants.

Parents: Steve and Linda Manguno, who now reside in Folsom. He has two older brothers, Chris (23) and Scott (26). Scott is a Hannan history teacher and coaches the Hawks’ boys’ basketball team.
