Covington’s Lady Lions, the District 7-5A champions, lead the field of four district teams that qualified for the Class 5A Louisiana High School Athletic Association softball playoffs.

Mandeville, Northshore and St. Scholastica also made the field, but those teams will have to travel for the bi-district round while Covington remains at home.

CHS (19-11-2), the No. 14 seed, will host the Sulphur Lady Tornadoes, the 19th seed, Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Lady Lions coach Christine Beauvais said Sulphur is a successful program with rich tradition.

“I know coach Julie Mancuso, and I have a lot of respect for her. Sulphur always has a good club. It should be a great first round match up. We will have all we can handle, and I hope we give them all they can handle as well,” Beauvais said.

Sulphur beat Covington 3-1 in the bi-district round two years ago.

Covington junior pitcher Lisa Stanga (15-10-1), who posted an 11-3 district record, will start for the Lady Lions. CHS’ leading run producers, senior catcher Meghan McDaniel and shortstop Jessica Jenkins, lead the Lady Lions attack. Stanga, Meghan Thigpen and second baseman Lacee Gallardo have also been productive at the plate.

Mandeville’s Lady Skippers (16-11-2), the 21st seed, travel to meet the New Iberia Yellow Jackets (17-6-1), the 12th seed. The teams square off Tuesday at 4 p.m.

MHS defeated Northlake Christian School Thursday, 8-1, in a preparation game for the bi-district round.

MHS senior Jennie Trepagnier (12-5-2) with a 10-2 district mark, helped lead the Lady Skippers to a second-place finish in District 7-5A, tied with Northshore at 10-4.

The Lady Skippers are batting .318 as a team with six hitters coming in at .300 or better with Trepagnier, Mel Gaines, Sarah Mahavier, Heather Nastasia and Joanna Rochelle carrying the offensive load.

Northshore, the 18th seed, will be traveling to Captain Shreve, the 15th seed, on Tuesday.

The time was still up in the air at presstime, but NHS coach Marian Eades said the game would be at either 3:30 p.m. or 4:30 p.m.

The Lady Panthers finished the year tied with Mandeville at 10-4 for second place in District 7-5A.

Kasi Wood leads the Lady Panthers with 16 runs batted in during her 28 games and has two homers. Fallon Lumpkin, who has been limited by injury, has posted a .436 batting average with a homer, 11 RBIs and eight doubles for 19 games. Leadoff hitter Ellie Gonsolin is hitting at a .318 clip with two homers and 10 runs batted in.

St. Scholastica Academy (17-10) earned a fourth-place finish in district play at 8-6. The No. 27 seeded Doves enter the playoffs as a wild card team. SSA travels to Lafayette Tuesday to battle the St. Thomas More Lady Cougars, who enter as a No. 6 seed. The game is scheduled for 4:30.

SSA senior hurler Lauren Fereday (14-6) will take the hill for the Doves.

I also want to wish Mandeville, Northshore and St. Scholastica good luck as well. Show the state what 7-5A is all about.

Have Fun Lady's and May God be with you all.
