Fontainebleau track continued its dominance Wednesday taking both titles in the Bulldog Invitational held at the Dawg Pound. Fontainebleau athletes excelled, taking most of the individual awards. Bulldogs’ senior runner Jeff Sanders won the boys’ overall MVP and Lady Dawgs’ junior sprinter Jamie Riles earned the girls’ overall MVP.

Sanders was a double winner, lowering his own school record in the 800 meters (1:56.75) and breaking his old school mark (1:57.00). He also won the 3,200 meters (10:03.22). Sanders also ran as a member of the Bulldogs’ victorious 4x400 meter relay team (3:26.74). He ran the second leg. The other members included Carey Gagnard, Zach Harris and Blake Satterlee.

Sanders said since he wasn’t running the 1,600 meters he knew he would be fresh for the 800.

“Going into the race, I wanted to go out and get a really good time to see where I was heading into district. I was really pleased to run a 1:56,” Sanders said.

Sanders was also happy winning the 3,200 because it was the first time he had run it this year.

Riles was a triple winner, taking the 100 meters (12.00), 200 meters (24.98) and the 400 meters (57.66).

FHS head track coach Leonard Tridico summed it up as a good meet with some solid competition. Twelve boys teams and 10 girls teams competed in the invitational.

“Our girls did very well. They were in control of the meet. On the boys’ side, it continues to be a battle between Slidell, Northshore and us. On any given day, those two teams can come and get you. We are aware of that, so we’re not taking the competition lightly,” Tridico said.

The District 7-5A Championships take place on Wednesday at Fontainebleau. The field events begin at 3 p.m., followed by the running events at 5.

“We use the Bulldog Invitational as a last minute tune-up to make sure things are finalized before heading into the district meet. We need to make sure that we are on top of our game,” Tridico added.

FHS senior Uzunma Udeh was named the girls’ Outstanding Field Performer. Udeh won the long jump (18-01), establishing her personal best in the event, and won the triple jump (39-04), also her best distance of the season. Udeh also took third place in the discus (93-08).

“The weather was great. It really helped bring the mood for the day’s events. This is perfect timing right before district, then regionals and state,” Udeh said.

FHS assistant track coach Clark Hershey described Udeh’s performance as fantastic.

“I’m really happy for her. She has been training really hard. She seems to be peaking at the right time,” Hershey said.

FHS junior Darrel Brown was named the boys’ Outstanding Field athlete. Brown won the discus (137-09), and was second in the shot put (49-05.50).

FHS’ Amy Deeble, a sophomore, was named the girls’ Outstanding Track Performer. Deeble won the 3,200 meters (12:06.79), and was second in the 1,600 (5:43.30). Slidell junior sprinter Jeremy Raffray garnered the Outstanding Track award. Raffray was a double event winner, taking the 110-meter hurdles (16.01), and the 300 hurdles (43.33).

Fontainebleau took the girls’ title, blowing by the competition with 190 points. FHS senior Cara Wells helped the Lady Bulldogs win the title as she posted two victories.

She won the shot put (39-10.25) and the javelin (109-05). Faron Henault won the pole vault (9-00), and Jessica Day took the high jump (5-00).

Northshore (87) was second in the girls’ competition followed by Xavier Prep (85,50). West Jeff (72) and Helen Cox (35) rounded out the top five. Slidell’s Lady Tigers (35) came in sixth with McDonogh 35 (25) in seventh. Class 1-A Northlake Christian School (15) took eighth, followed by Bogalusa (8.50). Clark (6) closed out the field.

Northshore’s Jenna Henssler turned in an outstanding performance, helping carry the Lady Panthers to their second-place finish. Henssler, a double winner, won the 800 meters (2:29.85), and 1,600 (5:40.15). She posted a second-place finish in the 3,200 (13:05.12).

Henssler, who logged her best time of the season in the 1,600 meters, was happy following the race.

“The race went smooth for me. My split time was a little slow, so I decided to pick it up. I changed my strategy a little bit by starting to sprint with 300 meters left instead of waiting until the last 100 meters. I was able to push myself at the end,” Henssler said.

Henssler talked about her victory in the 800.

“I have run quite a bit against Elisha (Tarbell-FHS), so I knew I would have good competition. I sprinted again at the end of the race, earlier than I usually do. I felt really good, and I had a good day,” Henssler added.

Henssler held off Tarbell, winning the 800 by just under five seconds. Henssler also ran a leg on the Northshore Lady Panthers’ 4x400 meter relay team, which finished third (4:24.47).

Slidell’s Bianca Navarre won the discus (105-01), establishing a personal best in the event. She was also fourth in the shot put (29-10.75) to help the Lady Tigers to their sixth-place finish.
