First Baptist Christian School in Slidell, which will compete in the LHSAA for the first time next season, has named basketball coach Scott Reine assistant athletic director to Theresa Earhart.

Reine, who works in real estate as his full-time job, said the school is preparing to be a member of the LHSAA and he is familiar with a lot of the rules. He said Earhart told him she could use some help, and the two agreed on Reine getting the position.

Reine, who began the school year as an assistant on Pope John Paul II’s basketball coaching staff before leaving in November to take a position at First Baptist, said he is ready for the new challenge.

“I’m very excited,” Reine said. “Between coaching and assistant AD, if I didn’t have to do real estate as a full-time career, which I love, I’d be at First Baptist as a full-time job. That’s how excited I am about it. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We’ve made some dramatic changes in a month.”

Some of the changes are in the form of adding sports and making the existing ones better.

The boys’ basketball team is anticipating 30 people coming out for spring practice on April 21. Those players are not guaranteed a spot on the squad, but the school will have several teams, including sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teams and freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams. There are 25 boys signed up for the newly formed cross-country team. Reine also said the school has added a baseball team and will look for a place to play as well as raising funds to buy equipment. There will also be a Junior High Flag Football squad. He said the school will get a coach and then decide whether to be intramural or compete for the playoffs.

The school will be competing in District 10-C with Grand Isle, Phoenix, Reserve Christian, Bishop McManus and Holy Rosary. Reine said he has learned a lot about First Baptist in his time there and is excited about the future.

“I knew about the school, but I wasn’t very familiar with it six months ago. It’s a phenomenal school. I’m very proud to be a part of it,” he said.
