The Capital One St. Tammany Parish Track Meet got under way Friday at Slidell High, but then the rain came near the end of the field events and lightning in the area forced the meet to be cancelled.

With scheduled commitments already made and all of the parish schools taking part, the decision was to have no make-up for the meet, and no team champion was declared.

Three field events, including the javelin, triple jump and boys’ pole vault, were cancelled. Slidell coach Mike Wills, whose school hosted the event, said he felt bad for the competitors.

“It was disappointing more for the kids than the coaches because they want to see how they stack up against their peers,” Wills said. “The smaller schools get an opportunity to see how they fare against the bigger schools.”

The meet featured five girls’ events and four for the boys.

The only double-winner in the rain-shortened meet was Fontainebleau’s Uzumna Udeh, who captured the discus (99-2) and the long jump (16-8).

Udeh said she only took one jump because she wanted to stay fresh for a meet in Alabama the following day.

Udeh said in the discus, it came down to her final toss.

“On my last throw, I just put it all out there, and it was enough to get me first,” she said.

Udeh added her feelings on winning in this meet.

“It’s important because it’s a title meet. To say you’re a parish champion is a big deal,” Udeh said.

Fontainebleau’s girls won all events except the shot put, which was taken by Covington’s Gloria Darby (37-6.5), who was also runner-up in the discus (98-10).

Fontainebleau’s Faron Henault was tops in the pole vault (9-9), and Jessica Day captured the high jump (5-4).
