Parish track meet cancelled after some field events due to lightning

The Capital One St. Tammany Parish Track Meet got under way Friday at Slidell High, but then the rain came near the end of the field events and lightning in the area forced the meet to be cancelled.

Covington senior Lacee Gallardo is a two-sport athlete for the Lady Lions. Gallardo hit .354 in district play and helped lead the Lady Lions’ softball team to the District 7-5A title with a 13-1 record. Gallardo starts at second base and is the Lady Lions’ leadoff hitter. She batted .460 on the season with 29 runs scored and drove in nine runs.

NCS Wolverines capture District 7-1A title
Northlake Christian School’s Wolverines secured the District 7-1A title with a 7-4 victory in extra innings Tuesday over the Christian Life Academy Crusaders in Baton Rouge behind senior Sam Scheibal’s seventh homer of the year. Scheibal, the Wolverines top hitter with a .481 average, gave his club the lead with a solo homer in the top of the first. Scheibal, who is second on the team with 30 runs batted in, has also scored 28 times to lead the team in that category.

Fontainebleaus Bernard signs with Louisiana Tech
Fontainebleau senior Jean Bernard, a three-sport athlete for the Lady Bulldogs, has signed her national letter of intent to attend Louisiana Tech University in Ruston. Bernard will receive a soccer scholarship along with a presidential scholarship for academics.

FHS sweeps titles in Bulldog Invitational
Fontainebleau track continued its dominance Wednesday taking both titles in the Bulldog Invitational held at the Dawg Pound. Fontainebleau athletes excelled, taking most of the individual awards. Bulldogs’ senior runner Jeff Sanders won the boys’ overall MVP and Lady Dawgs’ junior sprinter Jamie Riles earned the girls’ overall MVP.

In a somewhat ironic twist of fate, Archbishop Hannan’s Lady Hawks, the second-place team in District 7-1A, will host the district champion Northlake Christian School Lady Wolverines Tuesday in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association bi-district round of the Class A state softball playoffs.

With an overall coaching record of 629 wins and 248 losses, Salmen High School’s basketball coach Jay Carlin has been ranked Louisiana’s 13th all-time winningest coach. St. Tammany Parish School Board Deputy Superintendent Trey Folse, one of Carlin’s former assistants, introduced Carlin at the School Board meeting Thursday night and praised him for not only providing his players with a responsible role model, but also acting as a father figure for them on occasion.

Looper helps lead Privateer golf team to fourth-place tourney finish
University of New Orleans freshman golfer Ken Looper III, a 2007 Fontainebleau grad, helped lead the Privateers to a fourth-place finish in the 16-team field Tuesday in the Arkansas State University Indian Classic at Sage Meadows Golf Course. UNO won the event in 2006 and was runner-up last year.
