Opening arguments started today in the second-degree murder trial of Daniel Richardson, accused of shooting to death an Abita Springs man in late October 2006.

Prosecutors for the 22nd Judicial Court in Covington say Richardson, now 22, killed Quincy White, then 28, during a Saturday morning fight outside a home on Success and Rose streets, west of Abita Springs.

Responding to a shooting call, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office deputies found White slumped over in his car with the hazard lights on, Rick Wood, spokesman for District Attorney Walter Reed said.

White was rushed to St. Tammany Parish Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

If convicted, Richardson faces a mandatory life sentence.

Assistant District Attorney Julie Knight is prosecuting Richardson and will likely call witness testimony and ballistic testing experts to the stand.

State Judge Reginald T. Badeaux III is presiding. Defense attorney Jerry Fontenot is representing Richardson.
