The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is searching for a man who allegedly attempted to kidnap a 2-year-old boy outside his Slidell area home Sunday afternoon.

About 2 p.m. Sunday an unidentified homeowner was outside her house on Liberty Drive near Carroll Road playing with her son when a white male approached and tried to grab him, St. Tammany Parish spokesman George Bonnett said.

“The child’s mother yelled and ran toward the boy, causing the suspect to run to his vehicle in a nearby parking lot,” Bonnett said in a press release.

A radio bulletin immediately alerted deputies, who have searched since Sunday for the man described as a black-haired, 30-year-old white male with a pale complexion, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall wearing a white shirt. He fled on Liberty Drive toward Carroll Road in a mid 1990’s Honda four-door sedan, possibly painted primer gray, Bonnett said.

“We still have not found the individual,” Bonnett said late Monday morning, adding later, “unfortunately we don’t have a tag on the vehicle, which always helps.”

In searching for the suspect, deputies on Sunday afternoon and Monday ran checks through the Sheriff’s Office database of sexual offenders living within a 3-mile radius of the household.

“None matched the description,” Bonnett said.

As of Monday morning, it was unclear if the car was registered in Louisiana or if the man was a St. Tammany Parish resident, Bonnett said.
