Gernon scholarship available for Pearl River High boy, girl

Pearl River High School students vying for a chance at the Nina Gernon Scholarship have until March 31 to apply.

The Pearl River Women's Civic Club awards the scholarship each year. It was established in 1970 when the family of Nina Gernon donated $1,000 in her memory to help a needy student in the community. Through the initial endowment, fundraisers, and donations from the community, the scholarship has continued to grow throughout the years.

This year the Civic Club will award two $1,000 scholarships, which will go to one senior girl and one senior boy at PRHS. In the spirit for which it was intended, the scholarships will be awarded with an emphasis based on financial need.

Applicants should have at least a 2.5 grade point average, an exemplary disciplinary record, and have participated in extra-curricular activities. The student should have plans to attend a two or four year college in the fall.  Scholarship disbursements are made directly to the school of attendance.

Applications can be obtained in the office of Jeannie Beaushaw, guidance counselor at PRHS, and must be completed by March 31.

The scholarship recipients will be announced at the Pearl River High School annual awards program in May.
