The Mandeville Trailhead's worst enemy may have finally met its match.

At the completion of the current renovations, the first set of rules will be set in stone in an effort to decrease vandalism and juvenile delinquency at the trailhead facility.

Introduced as an ordinance by Councilman Jerry Coogan and approved recently by the City Council, the new rules of the facility located on Lafitte Street state public hours will be from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. The rules also prohibit climbing on railings, rollerblading, skating and skateboarding.

The new regulations came after the Mandeville Police notified Coogan of the lack of rules after he called to report individuals skateboarding on the property after hours.

"They said they can't do anything about it because there was no law against what they were doing," Coogan said.

"It's embarrassing, but I thought the rules were always there," he said. "I didn't know the rules didn't exist."

Dumbfounded by this new data, he set off to create an ordinance limiting the use of the facility to help ensure the longevity of the $500,000 makeover that began last year.

He said the biggest problem the city is experiencing at the trailhead is vandalism by teens visiting there late at night.

He also said the new rules will demand that young people be accompanied by an adult while visiting the trailhead.

"We have parents that drop their kids off with their skateboards at the trailhead while they go and have dinner on the Lakefront," Coogan said, adding skateboards cause as much damage as vandalism when they skate on the stage area.

Signs will soon be in place, and police will enhance their patrols of the area to help enforce the laws.

Ultimately, Mayor Eddie Price said it's about keeping residents safe.

"We want that place to be safe and not get vandalized," Price said adding the construction is 95 percent complete and expects it to open soon.

" Funny thing is the skateboarders are some of the only regular users of the location during non-event times. It will seem even more like a ghost town now. "

" Problem: vandelism by people at the park after hours.

    Solution: Ban skateborading.

Maybe the solution should be related to the problem a little bit closer? "
