'Angel Among Us' nominations sought

Published on Thursday, February 7, 2008 4:34 PM CST

Year after year many outstanding volunteers contribute to make the community a better place to live. The HOST Board of Hospice of St. Tammany would once again like to honor a special person who has made a difference by their volunteer work during 2007.

This award was first established in 1993 as the Connie M. Hulsey Community Volunteer Award to spotlight anyone from within religious, social or civic organizations who has gone above and beyond in making the area a better place to live. Kathy Hayward, Chairwoman of the 2008 event, states: "The selection committee has learned how fortunate our community is to have so many people who give so much of themselves and ask so little. Since Katrina, that has been especially true."

Past recipients include Connie Hulsey, Al Andry, Emily Diamond, Maria Burkhardt, Kurt Keay, Anne Barnes, Buddy Anderson, Phyllis Stram, Sandra Root, Harry Warner, Britni Michelle Adcox, Shirley Deluzain, Kathy Hayward and Joe Lazo.

Nominations from prior years are sometimes considered with current ones because some individuals have been nominated more than once and by various people. Entries can be sent in writing, giving name and details of accomplishments. They should be postmarked by Feb. 29, and sent to the Angel Among Us Selection Committee, Hospice of St. Tammany, 1202 S. Tyler St., Covington, LA 70433. Nominations can also be emailed to commdept@stph.org. For more information, call Kathy Hayward at 630-5861.

The HOST Board for Hospice of St. Tammany is pleased to recognize the work of all volunteers. The 2008 recipient of the Connie M. Hulsey Community Volunteer Award will be honored at the Angel Among Us Banquet to be held at Benedict's Plantation, April 24, at 6:30 p.m. with a cash bar. Tickets for the event are $30 and the award presentation will be made during dinner.

" It is a shame that I have to drive all the way from Slidell to Baton Rouge just to do my part in saving our environment. Our relatives In Los Angeles get a pretty penny for their recyclables enough to be exact that would be able to pay my car note. I can’t even imagine getting paid to recycle, considering we don’t even have recycling in the first place. So this article is a relief, and I hope this company follows through with their plan. All I am asking is for a public recycling drop-off location, because I will "

" our older house which was 1/3 the size as our newly constructed home, and by this time next year I will be looking at solar panels on our roof. So I know firsthand going green is worth every penny. We did the hard part now all we need to do is recycle all of those plastic bottles in the garage along with the paper and glass that is stacking up. I refuse to throw it away, when we visit relatives in Baton Rouge I take all of my recyclables with us and drop it in there (Coastal) sized recycle bin. "

" St. Tammany is falling behind; other parishes in Louisiana have already implemented recycling on a major scale, the Baton Rouge area for intense. I see it every day “go green recycle” I know I have gone as green as I can for the time being but I have hit a MAJOR road block, I can’t recycle which is the basic “go green” plow along with changing to compact florescent light bulbs. Our entire house has CFL light bulbs along with Foam insulation, and all energy star appliances and let me tell you our electric bill is about $50 cheaper than "

" I believe we could start recycling with containers located in strategic places that people could drop off their recyclable items. This is something that we have to start doing asap. Drop offs would elimnate their driving around to too many homes problem. If this company is not interested, we need to get someone who is!!! "
